
Recreate the classic plain steamed white rice from Panda Express at home with this simple and reliable recipe.
Rinse the Jasmine rice under cold running water in a fine-mesh sieve or bowl, swishing it around with your hand, until the water runs mostly clear. This removes excess starch, leading to fluffier, less sticky rice.
Combine the rinsed rice and cold water in a heavy-bottomed saucepan with a tight-fitting lid.
Place the saucepan over high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil, uncovered. Watch carefully to prevent boiling over.
Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to the lowest setting, cover the saucepan tightly with the lid, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, without lifting the lid. Do not stir the rice during this time.
After 18-20 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat, keeping the lid on, and let it rest for another 5-10 minutes. This allows the steam to finish cooking the rice evenly and makes it fluffier.
