Homemade In-N-Out Style Shakes (Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry)
Recreate the iconic thick and creamy shakes from In-N-Out Burger right in your own kitchen with this simple home-cook friendly recipe.
Ingredients
- 3 cups high-quality vanilla ice cream, slightly softened
- 1/2 cup whole milk, chilled
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for vanilla shake base)
- Pinch of salt (optional, enhances flavor)
- FOR CHOCOLATE SHAKE:
- 2-3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1-2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or to taste)
- FOR STRAWBERRY SHAKE:
- 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries (if frozen, use without added sugar)
- 1-2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or to taste, depending on berry sweetness)

Chill your serving glasses in the freezer for at least 10 minutes. This helps keep the shake colder and thicker longer.

For the Classic Vanilla Shake: In a powerful blender, combine the slightly softened vanilla ice cream, chilled whole milk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and an optional pinch of salt. Blend on high speed, starting with short pulses, until the mixture is completely smooth and thick. If it's too thick, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time; if too thin, add more ice cream.

For the Chocolate Shake: Follow the instructions for the vanilla shake, but also add 2-3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1-2 tablespoons of granulated sugar to the blender with the ice cream and milk.

For the Strawberry Shake: Follow the instructions for the vanilla shake, but also add 1 cup of strawberries (fresh or frozen) and 1-2 tablespoons of granulated sugar to the blender with the ice cream and milk. If using frozen strawberries, the shake will be extra thick.
