
Recreate the iconic Animal Style burger experience from In-N-Out Burger right in your home kitchen with this spot-on copycat recipe.
First, prepare the Animal Style Spread: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, granulated sugar, and paprika. Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary. Set aside.
Prepare the grilled onions: Peel and finely dice the yellow onion. In a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter or heat the oil. Add the diced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, or until deeply caramelized and tender. Set aside.
Prepare the burger patties: Divide the ground beef into four equal portions (about 4 oz each). Gently form each portion into a thin, wide patty, slightly larger than your bun, as they will shrink when cooked. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
Toast the buns: Lightly butter the cut sides of the burger buns. Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the buns cut-side down and toast for 1-2 minutes until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
Cook the patties Animal Style: Heat the same skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place two patties in the pan. Immediately squirt about 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard onto the uncooked side of each patty. Cook for 2-3 minutes until a crust forms. Flip the patties. Immediately place a slice of American cheese on top of each patty. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the patties are cooked through to your desired doneness. Remove and keep warm. Repeat with the remaining two patties.
Assemble the burgers: On the bottom half of each toasted bun, spread a generous amount of Animal Style Spread. Layer with a piece of iceberg lettuce and tomato slices. Place one cheese-covered patty, then another cheese-covered patty. Spoon a generous amount of grilled onions over the top patty. Add dill pickle slices, then spread more Animal Style Spread on the top bun. Place the top bun on the burger. Serve immediately.
